Is there a way to install the gOS desktop on top of a current Ubuntu installation such that it is an additionnal session option in GDM?

I apologize about the repo key. There is a key, but I forgot to post it. You can get it here: http://www.thinkgos.com/files/gos_repo_key.asc

Add the following deb lines to sources.list to use our repository with Ubuntu:

deb http://packages.thinkgos.com/gos/ painful main
deb-src http://packages.thinkgos.com/gos/ painful main

Try to be nice to it, we are still in the process of moving servers and our current one has been under quite a bit of stress so far :)

Currently there is a greenos-desktop package in our repository, but it will not give you the complete experience. We are still hammering out the packaging, but eventually this will be easier to do. Also, we do not use network-manager so if you do install the greenos-desktop, network-manager will be replaced by the network configuration tools we are using.

Why would anyone want the gOS desktop when you can all have the clean desktop of Ubuntu?

It was interesting to try this, but I ran into several problems, the most important of which was that installing the greenos-desktop package caused gdm to be reconfigured so that I no longer had any way to choose any WM other than Enlightenment.

To install enlightenment from your repo, it prompts me to upgrade my version of apt. Why?

There is no changelog from the gos repo. Why do I need to install a non-Ubuntu version of apt to run greenos-desktop (or simply enlightenment)?

I guess the real question is will GOS fork or maintain binary-compatibility with Ubuntu?

Just followed the instructions and added to my Ubuntu 7.10 another session: gOS/Enlightenment! Almost everything works well, I guess I just need to dig deeper into the system to find all the tweaks...

The looks are awsome! Very, very cool, indeed. This is the best e17 theme I came across so far. Congratulations on that, it makes my Vaio feel like my powerbookG4!

I'm eagerly waiting for the online apps shortcuts on the dock for my experience t be almost complete! Keep up the good work, gOS team!

Instructions for adding the gOS repositories using Synaptic Package Manager: 1) under Settings > Repositories > Third Party Software, click Add. 2) copy and paste the first line (deb http://packages.thinkgos.com/gos/ painful main deb-src) and click Add Source. 3) click Add again and copy and paste the second line (deb http://packages.thinkgos.com/gos/ painful main) and click Add Source. 4) reload the package manager when prompted (Note: If you are not prompted to reload, click the Reload button. If you get an error about main source not responding, click Close, uncheck the thinkgos main source repository under Settings and reload again. There is no public key available currently which will give a GPG error, click Close for the error.) 6) search synaptic for greenos-desktop to see the gOS packages available.

Just download the Enlightenment window manager and configure it based on gOS lookings.
